Wound Care After Joint Replacement

Total knee and total hip replacement surgeries are conducted by Mr Sulaiman Alazzawi at two leading private hospitals in London.

Upon discharge from hospital, the nursing team will furnish you with instructions on proper wound care. Additionally, they will provide a contact number for any post-surgery concerns.

The recommended practice is to keep the dressing on for two weeks, ensuring it stays dry. Following this period, patients can remove the dressing, often managing it themselves. However, for those who feel uneasy, the practice nurse at their local GP surgery can assist with the removal.

No suture removal is necessary after a total knee or hip replacement, as Mr Alazzawi uses dissolvable stitches. Once the dressing is removed, the wound can be left exposed, and getting it wet poses no issues.

For enhanced scar healing, Mr Alazzawi suggests applying Bio Oil or moisturising cream to the wound, if desired.
